The Soldier Hollow Charter School, with 240 students in grades K-8, is an integral part of the legacy of Soldier Hollow Resort, site of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Where else can you go to school in the middle of a world-renowned trail system, skiing several days a week?

Soldier Hollow Charter Summary
Mission
Provide an innovative educational model that nurtures inquiry, creativity and inspires the desire to learn. The natural world will be used as a classroom for place-based learning across the curriculum.
Key Charter Facts
SHCS is a free, public charter school.
Administrative Structure
A Board comprised of seven members governs the school. The Principal manages day-to-day operations of school under direction of Board. Teachers report to and work under the guidance of the Principal.
The Board meets the first Tuesday of every month.
Student Body
- Grades: K-8.
- Seeks a Student-Teacher ratio: 20-1
- School size: ~ 240
SHCS seeks a diverse student population. Students are prioritized for openings by:
- Current students.
- Siblings of currently enrolled students.
- Lottery of remaining applicants.
Parent Involvement
- Volunteers are an integral and critical part of our healthy running of the School. Parent commitment is vital.
- Families are expected to volunteer at least 3 hours per week for the first child and an additional (1) hour per week for each sibling. (2 children = 4 hrs./wk; 3 children = 5 hrs./wk, etc.) Volunteer Hours must be logged in at the school office or through the www.myshcs.org.
- It is imperative that a parent find a replacement If unable to cover his or her specific duties.
- Parents are expected to get their children to school on time.
- Parents are expected to call and notify the School when their children will be absent.
- Parents must sign-in and out their child during the course of the school day if they are coming in late or leaving early.
- Parents are expected to check-in to the office before entering a Classroom.
Curriculum
- The Utah State Core Curriculum provides the basis for teaching at SHCS. However our faculty strives to take our students beyond the basics by integrating the arts and environment into the core subjects and emphasizing place-based learning approaches.
- Physical education is emphasized with the cooperation of the Soldier Hollow Ski Resort. We are able to offer a cross-country ski program as part of our winter curriculum.
Funding
- About two-thirds of the operating funds come from the State of Utah. The remaining funds are sought through grant writing and fundraising.
- Due to these fiscal constraints there are no school-provided lunches or busing.

Is it possible to get a monthly agenda of the outdoor activities the kids are involved in, with specific days/times/locations? I have a preschooler that I would like to expose to similar activities to see if he would adapt well to your program, but I have no idea where to take him-I’m new to the area. In addition I’m not sure how far to push a 4 year old boy when it comes to hiking, x-country, etc. Though I would really like him to gain an appreciation for them, as opposed to the video games, to which he’s already addicted unfortunately.

Megan,
As for outdoor kids programs, SHCS has outdoor programs during the school year for K-8th graders. They ranges from environmental programs to cross country ski program. During the Summer, some of our students are part of a cross country ski team that has weekly strength training sessions. Other outdoor programs (not sure on ages) would be: our Summer Camps, Parks and Rec programs, and, of course, there are plenty of hiking and biking trails (Soldier Hollow, Dutch Hollow, Snake Creek area, Deer Creek Trail) throughout the valley. Would recommend stopping at the Chamber of Commerce for more information.
Enjoy the Summer,
Karla
My son, Kaleb, will be new to your classroom beginning the week of December 5, 2011. We are making a huge move from across the country (Virginia) and he is feeling very nervous about it all. Is it possible to get an email address for Mrs. Heimburger so that I may communicate with her before Kaleb begins school? I believe it would really help the transition for him. Thanks!
