SHCS News – Sept 10th

Parking: Thank you to all of the parents for your help with parking.  We appreciate all of the different suggestions that have been made and appreciate everyone’s patience this week as we have worked on the best solution.  We will be parking in the lower lot all year, so please be sure to arrive a little earlier so the kids have plenty of time to walk up to the school.

For the remainder of the year, parking will be as follows:

Drop off: Please turn right as you enter the parking lot and circle around the edge to the front. Have the children exit the car and proceed to the passenger side of the car and walk AROUND the parking lot (not through).  If you wish to park, please escort your child through the parking lot to the entrance.

Pick Up: Please turn right as you enter the parking lot, then park your car and walk to the coned-off area to pick up your children. The students will all be waiting in the safe area until a parent/adult walks over and gets them.

With just a little patience we can keep our children safe!

School Calendar: Copies of 2009/2010 school calendar are available in school office. Also, updated on site. See far right.

5th-8th Grade: Students will be biking to the Provo River in Midway on Monday, Sept. 14th. While there, students will spend the day testing water quality by performing a biological assessment (what is living in the river), a physical assessment (look at the volume, temp, substrate, etc), and a chemical assessment (look at the levels of dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, etc of the water).

  • Each student must bring: a bike, helmet, & a lunch (that does not need to be microwaved).
  • Students with single speed bikes have in the past been very tired, so please encourage kids to bring multi-speed bikes (if possible). Please be sure to have all bikes (in working condition) at school by Monday morning.
  • We will leave the school around 8:30 and be gone all day. Students will travel to Midway via back roads & bike paths.
  • Parents who would like to join us for the day (or just visit throughout the day) are more then welcome.
  • A parent with a vehicle will be needed to transport testing equipment to the river site and back. Please call Kelly Gallo 570-764-2609 to volunteer.

Thank you so much for your help in making this valuable educational experience happen!

Annual Fall Gala, Saturday, October 24th, Zermatt Resort: This is our school’s largest annual fundraiser.  It is an adult only dinner with silent & live auctions.  You won’t want to miss out!  Last year, with the combined efforts of the auction and raffle we were able to raise nearly $28,000.

As a reminder, we ask that you participate with us to ensure the success of our school’s fundraising efforts.  Here are just some of the ways in which your family can ensure the best possible outcome for the 2009 Gala:

Attend and Invite: The Gala is a very entertaining and enjoyable evening.  Everyone who attends will be glad they participated in this event.  Watch for tickets to go on sale in just a couple of weeks.  For families in which cost would make your attendance prohibitive please see Mr. Weber for available sponsored tickets.

Donate or Solicit: Each family should donate or solicit at least two products or services that can be auctioned off. In years past the school has had so many wonderful & unique items offered for auction — handmade jewelry, cards, scarves, gift baskets, a Lake Powell house boat rental, a helicopter tour of the Heber Valley, snow boards, skis, Provo River rafting trips, a time share vacation in Mexico, Moab adventure trips, birthday party packages, and numerous gift certificates to restaurants, hotel stays, ski resorts, massages, manicures and pedicures, etc.

Sponsor: If you are a business owner this is a great opportunity.  For a $300 table sponsorship you will receive tickets to the Fall Gala (you can keep these for yourself, give them away or donate them back to the school for staff or for those who are in need of a sponsored ticket.) You will also receive advertisement; your logo will be on all of our ads in the Wasatch Wave and on all the posters that will be placed around town. This is a wonderful marketing opportunity!  For a $500 or more cash donation we will hang your business’s banner the night of the Gala. Please call or email Jami ASAP if you are interested in this option so we can get started on the advertisement.

Raffle tickets: Support your child in selling “raffle-style” drawing tickets to family, friends, and neighbors. More information to come soon.

List of Auction Items: To help refresh everyone’s memory we will post a record of all the donations received for last year’s Gala and who solicited the items outside of the office door. If it is possible for you to get the same donations this year that would be superb!  As donations come in we will post a current solicitation record in the office so businesses are not asked numerous times to donate to our school.

Please drop all items off no later than Friday Oct 16th at the school office or at:

Editor’s note: Please contact Jami Oram if you are able to help with the Fall Gala.  The volunteer sign-up sheet for the fall gala was taken home to give to Jami; then the editor’s kids got a hold of it, made it into a paper airplane and promptly flew it into the ditch.  I (said editor) apologize to everyone and ask any potential volunteers to PLEASE get in touch with Jami Oram.  Otherwise you’ll have me calling each of you this coming week, and who really wants that.    -Tricia Livingstone
