Volunteer Opportunity: Want to be a STAR in someone’s life? Now is your chance. We are seeking willing parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or distant relatives to be STAR tutors for some of our STAR pupils this year. All you need is a love of reading & a desire to assist some children to enjoy it as much as you do. You will receive training & instruction from Mrs. Drake, former first grade teacher, & current Title I Reading Teacher & STAR tutoring coordinator. Morning or afternoon times are available any day of the week. (Sorry, no little siblings in attendance. It’s a quiet endeavor.) The projected start date is Monday, September 13th, 2010. Please leave your name & contact number with Joan at the school office (654-1347), or call Mrs. Drake at 657-0878 & leave a message, or email her at drake.sharon@gmail.com. Let’s get STARted!!

Rewards Program:  Here is a list of the different programs we participate in.  I encourage you to join us in actively supporting our students!  These are quick & easy ways to really help the school.  Please read through all of the information so you are familiar with it.  We have games & contests throughout the year, so it’s fun & kids have opportunities to win prizes!  Most contests have classes compete against each other, which means your child’s class is depending on you!  There are collection boxes in the office and in some classrooms.  Make sure your child’s name & teacher’s name is on everything they bring in.  The student who brings in the most items throughout the school year will receive a fabulous “reward”!

  • SMITH’S EARN AND LEARN PROGRAM: You can earn money for our school just by using your Fresh Values or Rewards card when you grocery shop at Smith’s.  It doesn’t cost you anything – they contribute a percentage of your purchase to the school.  The easiest way to enroll is to call them at 800-764-8897 and give them your fresh values number or your phone number.  It only takes about 30 seconds!  You can also enroll by taking the form into the store with you (your child will be bring it home soon).  Even if you’re already enrolled, YOU MUST RENEW EACH YEAR because they expire every September.  Last year we received $2,886.27 from this!
  • BOXTOPS: Please send in the little pink box tops from the items on the list your child will bring home.  They say “Box Tops for Education” on them.  Make sure the expiration date if visible on the boxtop.  Box tops with missing or expired dates will not be accepted.  There are hundreds of items, including nonfood products, with box tops on them so every one can easily participate in this! Please shop through the BOXTOPS MARKETPLACE when making purchases online.  This is quick, easy & free.  There are more than 100 stores that participate.  Simply go to www.boxtops4education.com, click on “Marketplace”, select your store & shop as usual.  Since it takes you to the store’s website, you are still able to use coupons and take advantage of special offers.  The stores contribute up to 8% of your purchase to the school.  All information is confidential & cannot be seen by anyone at the school.
  • CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION:  Send in the labels (with the barcode) from all Campbell’s & Pepperidge Farm
  • TYSON PROJECT A+:  Please send in the large “Support your School 123” labels from Tyson frozen chicken products.
  • CREAM O’WEBER:  Please send in the lids from all Cream O’Weber dairy & juice products.  The colored caps are marked on gallon jugs, but the wide flat white caps are also worth money.  These are on smaller bottles.

products included in your child’s list.  Please send in the lids on all V-8 juices.  Also, remind your child to put the label in the collection box if they bring a participating item in their lunch.

Encourage your friends, family & neighbors to help, too!  Please see the bulletin board at the bottom of the stairs for current information.  We collect all of these items all year long.  The class that brings in the most reward items though out the school year will get to have a party in May.  Please contact me if you have any questions.  Thank you! –J. Johnson at  gljill1@msn.com
