Soldier Hollow Charter School will have an all school attendance count. It is very important that you have your child at school this Thursday. Our school is funded by the amount of students that are present that day. There will be people from the state that will visit our school. –Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Picture Day, Weds., Sept. 30th – Please be sure to have children dressed for pictures. If they will not be in school, please be sure to let the office know. Thank you.
Student of the week: Please have your child (ren) fill out the “student of the week” form. We would like one completed by every student so that everyone has a chance to be spotlighted.
“Run for Books”, Saturday, Oct. 3rd, 8:00 am, Soldier Hollow: This is a 5K run for adults and a 1 mile run for kids. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of leveled reading books for our school. We would love everyone to be able to participate. You may register at the school the week before the event, and up to 30 minutes before we run on the day of the race. Registration on race day starts at 6:30 am so we strongly encourage everyone to register in advance to avoid lines at registration. Parking is in the school parking lot. Please come and support our school and invite friends and/or family to join us. We really need these books! We are looking for volunteers to assist with this event. To volunteer, email Jamie Coombs at michaelandjamiecoombs@juno.com
Fall Gala, Zermatt Resort: Thank you to everyone for all of your support for the upcoming Fall Gala! This is our 10th Anniversary celebration and we’re working with fervor to make this a special and memorable event. Let’s knock this one out of the park for our kids! Speaking of our school’s 10th anniversary, if you have photos from events sponsored by the school or done at the school I would love to include them in a special presentation to be shown the evening of the Gala. This would include photos from prior years Gala’s, the Provo River Watershed Festivals, SHCS annual Olympics, The Storytellers Festival, and any photos from those beginning years at Sundance. Please email me copies to oramsja@msn.com. Make sure to pick up a copy of the Wasatch Wave this week and check out our very first weekly advertisement announcing the upcoming Fall Gala. If your business would like to be included in this ad space as a sponsor please contact me at 657-2024 or at oramsja@msn.com. Please feel free to contact me with questions about the Fall Gala at 435-657-2024. Jami Oram, Fall Gala Chair

Rewards Program
We are beginning our first game this week! Every time your child brings in a label from Tyson frozen chicken they will get to choose a prize from the treasure chest. The school receives 24 cents for each “Support Your School” label. Please have your children put these in the collection boxes in their classrooms. Make sure your child’s name and teachers name are on the labels. This game will continue through October 9th.
Remember to enroll in the Smith’s Earn and Learn Program. Just call 1-800-764-8897 and give them your phone number or Fresh Values/Rewards card number. Please have your friends and family link their cards up, too. Even if you’re already enrolled, YOU MUST RENEW THIS MONTH! We just received $971.76 for last year. Only 22 people participated for our school. That’s really a shame since we had over 100 families enrolled in the school last year. A school in nearby Evanston, Wyoming just received over $16,000! I sincerely hope to see every parent in our school signed up this week. There is absolutely no reason not to do this! It doesn’t cost you anything or affect your card in anyway, and it takes less than a minute of your time.
Please shop through the BOXTOPS MARKETPLACE when making purchases online. Again, this is quick, easy and free. You won’t receive junk mail! There are more than 100 stores that participate. Simply go to www.boxtops4education.com, click on “Marketplace”, select your store and shop as usual. Since it takes you to the store’s website, you are still able to use coupons and take advantage of special offers. The stores contribute up to 8% of your purchase to the school. THAT’S A LOT!! Other schools are earning $20,000 each year from this alone. Since we have very limited shopping in our valley, most of us do shop online and every one of us should be taking advantage of this program. The first time you shop you will need to fill out a brief registration so boxtops knows which school you’re supporting. After that, all it requires is 2 extra mouse clicks – seriously!
Encourage your friends, family and neighbors to help, too! Our school would be earning $50,000 per year (or more) from these programs if everyone participated! That’s more than we receive from all of our other fundraisers combined – including the fall gala and the raffle tickets. This money doesn’t come from our own pockets either. Please take advantage of these wonderful opportunities we have and support Soldier Hollow Charter School! We collect all reward items all year long. See the bulletin board at the bottom of the stairs for current information. If you have any questions, please call or email me. Thank you so much! –Jill Johnson at 657-2136 or gljill1@msn.com
Charter School Ski Program 2009-2010: As we all know, the ski program is quickly approaching. With that in mind we have seen the school grow this year and Soldier Hollow needs some help to make this the best ski year yet!
SH Ski Lodge Is Hiring: The SH Lodge is looking for individuals that love kids and skiing. We need help during the charter school times to keep our program running. Responsibilities will include, but not limited to, helping with prep for the ski day, being responsible for groups of kids, putting away and organizing ski gear, running the program when I am not present, etc. Not only do we need help in Charter School, but we also need help in Little Vikings, and Ski School at the lodge. Please feel free to contact Andrea with specifics on schedules, pay rate, your availability, etc.
Please pass along to anyone who would be interested!

Rock Cliff Nature Center – Jordanelle State Parks
Soldier Hollow Charter School and Utah State Parks are partnering to offer the second annual Provo River Watershed Festival. This year, the festival will be celebrating National Take a Child Outside Week! This fun, free day will offer live music, hands-on activities, fishing instruction, geocaching instruction, birds of prey, Woodsy Owl, a duck derby, and vendors (selling food, books, prints, and natural body care products). The state park offers great hiking, biking, boating, and birding. So join us for a great day OUTSIDE! See you down by the river! Check out the PRI link on this page for more details about the festival!
Volunteering plays a critical role in the smooth operation of Soldier Hollow. We have updated the family list on the volunteer timesheet, which can be found on the Parent’s page.
To log your hours, go to the page and simply fill out your information. Make sure you select the correct Family Name from the pulldown list by checking the initials, which represent student names.
We will give you updates during the year as to your progress towards your family’s 100-hour goal.
Thanks for your support.
Parking: We appreciate all of the different suggestions that have been made and appreciate everyone’s patience this past week. We will be parking in the lower lot all year, so please be sure to arrive a little earlier so that the children have plenty of time to walk up to school. We will continue to work on the best possible solution for parking & for our children’s safety.
Crossing Guards: We are in need of volunteers for crossing guard duties — especially in the afternoon. If you are willing and able to help with this important duty, you will receive double volunteer hours for time spent as a crossing guard. Please contact Tiffany McClellan or Valerie Roadfuss.
Fall Gala, Sat., Oct 24th: Our annual Fall Gala is coming soon & we would like to see everybody there. Please be sure to read the Gala information letter that was sent out earlier this week.
Roots and Shoots: This Weekend! All students in grades 3-8 are invited to join Soldier Hollow’s after-school service club, Roots and Shoots! Roots and Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s international environmental and humanitarian program for youth. It is a fun way for young people to learn about the issues and problems in their communities and work to solve them. Students strive to make the world a better place by focusing on projects that improve the lives of people, animals, and the environment. We will meet throughout the year after school and on weekends for special field explorations and service projects. One example project- This year we will be working with the Utah Friends of Animals to help the local animal shelter. Children younger then 3rd grade are always welcome to join us on our field expeditions with parental supervision.
A great way for families to be involved in the Roots and Shoots group and support our school is coming up this weekend!! We will be at ParkSilly in Park City this Sunday to celebrate International Day of Peace. We will be working with Images of Nature Gallery in Park City to run a booth offering Peace Day related crafts for kids. Kids will also be able to help decorate a large peace dove. Thanks to some very industrious SHCS kindergarten parents we will also have a large peace dove to parade around Park Silly later in the afternoon. Image three 21-foot white peace doves parading up Main Street with many small peace doves and music accompanying us! What a message of peace!
Please join us in this fun day! Stop by with your family and make a craft, join in on the parade, or help kids make crafts at the craft booth! We’d love to see you any time you can pop in from 10AM-4PM!
If you have any questions or would like to sign up to help (you can sign up or just stop by on Sunday and lend a hand) please call or email Kelly Gallo at TeachingGreen@yahoo.com 570-764-2609.

This will be a fun day at the park! Bring your bikes, boats, and hiking shoes and “Take a Child Outside” at Rock Cliff Nature Center ! Free Admission all day! Provo River Watershed Festival Volunteers Needed: Volunteers are needed to do a number of things.
Day of the festival Help:
- Setting up (8:30AM-10:00AM)
- Breaking down (4:00PM-5:00PM)
- Help teach fishing. We have all of the equipment and now we need someone to share their knowledge and passion for the sport of fishing!
- Man the Welcome Table throughout the day. We will offer a list of what is happening throughout the day, information on our school, and provide any other announcements that may arise.
- Running an education booth.Anyone interested in helping run an educational, fun, hands-on booth please see Kelly Gallo as soon as possible. You can either run with your own idea that encourages getting kids outside, build upon established ideas, or help our students run a booth on the day of the festival.
- Carnival Games Booth. Help SHCS students run booths that are traditional carnival games turned into educational games! Do you have any ideas to help us build upon that?!?
Do you have any special skills, experiences, or knowledge you would like to share with the general public? This year’s theme is Take a Child Outside, so we are looking for knowledgeable presenters that can help give families ideas and skills to get outside! Maybe demonstrate climbing (knot techniques) and give ideas on how to get started in the sport. Kayak and want to demo the sport? Maybe you would like to use some of the lessons we have at school to teach Leave No Trace? Fly fish and want to offer tips and demos on casting, tying flies, etc. Are you an artist and want to teach watercolor techniques? The sky is the limit! Share your passion for the outdoors with other families!
Sponsors needed: We are seeking sponsors to help defray the costs of live entertainment, advertising, and to provide products for door prizes. All sponsors are recognized throughout the day of the festival, in press releases, and in advertising. Please contact Kelly Gallo if your business or organization is interested in sponsoring this educational and fun day!
As you can see, there is something for everyone! Please join us in making this a great day outside for local families and highlighting our great school! Contact Kelly Gallo to volunteer at TeachingGreen@yahoo.com or 570-764-2609.
Rewards Programs: Here is a list of the different programs we participate in. I encourage you to join us in actively supporting our students and school! These are quick and easy ways for SHCS to earn a lot of money. For grades K-4 there are collection boxes in each classroom. The older grades can use the collection boxes in the office. Please be sure your child’s name and teacher’s name is on everything they bring in. The student who brings in the most items throughout the school year will receive a fabulous “reward”!
SMITH’S EARN AND LEARN PROGRAM: You can earn money for our school just by using your Fresh Values or Rewards card when you shop at Smith’s. It doesn’t cost you anything – they contribute a percentage of your purchase to the school. The easiest way to enroll is to call them at 800-764-8897 and give them your fresh values number or your phone number. It only takes about 30 seconds! Even if you’re already enrolled, YOU MUST RENEW THIS MONTH! They expire every September.
BOXTOPS: I’m sure you are all familiar with the little pink box tops that are on most General Mills products (like cereal and fruit snacks) and Betty Crocker products. Did you know that they are also on brands like Juicy Juice, Cascadian Farms, Old El Paso, Yoplait, Pillsbury and Nature Valley? They’re even on Green Giant frozen vegetables, Wanchai Ferry dinner kits and Chex Mix. What if you don’t eat any of those foods? That’s okay! Box tops are on many non-food brands including Ziploc, Kleenex, Cottonelle, Scott, Viva and Hefty. Best of all, they can be found on Avery office products for those of you who own a company or work in an office. If you have a baby, please note that box tops are even on Huggies diapers and wipes. I’m telling you, they are everywhere! Please make sure the expiration date if visible on the box top. Box tops with missing or expired dates will not be accepted.
Please shop through the BOXTOPS MARKETPLACE when making purchases online. Again, this is quick, easy and free. You won’t receive junk mail, I promise! There are more than 100 stores that participate including Staples, Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, and PetSmart. Simply go to www.boxtops4education.com, click on “Marketplace”, select your store and shop as usual. Since it takes you to the store’s website, you are still able to use coupons and take advantage of special offers. The stores contribute up to 8% of your purchase to the school. THAT’S A LOT!!
CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION: Send in the labels (with the barcode) from all Campbell’s products including soup, beans, chili, tomato juice and gravies. These labels are also on Pepperidge Farm products like bread and Goldfish crackers. Some other places where you can find labels for education are on Prego pasta sauce, Spaghetti-Os and Swanson’s broth. Please send in the lids on all V-8 juices.
TYSON PROJECT A+: Send in the red labels from Tyson frozen chicken products. They say “Support Your School”.
HOME TEAM REWARDS: These are little logos found on Fast Fixin’ and Fast Classic frozen products. They make chicken nuggets, cheeseburgers and dinners.
Encourage your friends, family and neighbors to help, too! Please see the bulletin board at the bottom of the stairs for current information. We collect all of these items all year long. So even if we’re having a contest for box tops, you can keep sending in Campbell’s labels at the same time. The class that brings in the most reward items though out the school year will get to have a rootbeer float party in May. If you have any questions, please call or email me. Thank you so much! -J. Johnson 657-2136 or gljill1@msn.com
Parking: Thank you to all of the parents for your help with parking. We appreciate all of the different suggestions that have been made and appreciate everyone’s patience this week as we have worked on the best solution. We will be parking in the lower lot all year, so please be sure to arrive a little earlier so the kids have plenty of time to walk up to the school.
For the remainder of the year, parking will be as follows:
Drop off: Please turn right as you enter the parking lot and circle around the edge to the front. Have the children exit the car and proceed to the passenger side of the car and walk AROUND the parking lot (not through). If you wish to park, please escort your child through the parking lot to the entrance.
Pick Up: Please turn right as you enter the parking lot, then park your car and walk to the coned-off area to pick up your children. The students will all be waiting in the safe area until a parent/adult walks over and gets them.
With just a little patience we can keep our children safe!
School Calendar: Copies of 2009/2010 school calendar are available in school office. Also, updated on site. See far right.
5th-8th Grade: Students will be biking to the Provo River in Midway on Monday, Sept. 14th. While there, students will spend the day testing water quality by performing a biological assessment (what is living in the river), a physical assessment (look at the volume, temp, substrate, etc), and a chemical assessment (look at the levels of dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, etc of the water).
- Each student must bring: a bike, helmet, & a lunch (that does not need to be microwaved).
- Students with single speed bikes have in the past been very tired, so please encourage kids to bring multi-speed bikes (if possible). Please be sure to have all bikes (in working condition) at school by Monday morning.
- We will leave the school around 8:30 and be gone all day. Students will travel to Midway via back roads & bike paths.
- Parents who would like to join us for the day (or just visit throughout the day) are more then welcome.
- A parent with a vehicle will be needed to transport testing equipment to the river site and back. Please call Kelly Gallo 570-764-2609 to volunteer.
Thank you so much for your help in making this valuable educational experience happen!
Annual Fall Gala, Saturday, October 24th, Zermatt Resort: This is our school’s largest annual fundraiser. It is an adult only dinner with silent & live auctions. You won’t want to miss out! Last year, with the combined efforts of the auction and raffle we were able to raise nearly $28,000.
As a reminder, we ask that you participate with us to ensure the success of our school’s fundraising efforts. Here are just some of the ways in which your family can ensure the best possible outcome for the 2009 Gala:
• Attend and Invite: The Gala is a very entertaining and enjoyable evening. Everyone who attends will be glad they participated in this event. Watch for tickets to go on sale in just a couple of weeks. For families in which cost would make your attendance prohibitive please see Mr. Weber for available sponsored tickets.
• Donate or Solicit: Each family should donate or solicit at least two products or services that can be auctioned off. In years past the school has had so many wonderful & unique items offered for auction — handmade jewelry, cards, scarves, gift baskets, a Lake Powell house boat rental, a helicopter tour of the Heber Valley, snow boards, skis, Provo River rafting trips, a time share vacation in Mexico, Moab adventure trips, birthday party packages, and numerous gift certificates to restaurants, hotel stays, ski resorts, massages, manicures and pedicures, etc.
• Sponsor: If you are a business owner this is a great opportunity. For a $300 table sponsorship you will receive tickets to the Fall Gala (you can keep these for yourself, give them away or donate them back to the school for staff or for those who are in need of a sponsored ticket.) You will also receive advertisement; your logo will be on all of our ads in the Wasatch Wave and on all the posters that will be placed around town. This is a wonderful marketing opportunity! For a $500 or more cash donation we will hang your business’s banner the night of the Gala. Please call or email Jami ASAP if you are interested in this option so we can get started on the advertisement.
• Raffle tickets: Support your child in selling “raffle-style” drawing tickets to family, friends, and neighbors. More information to come soon.
List of Auction Items: To help refresh everyone’s memory we will post a record of all the donations received for last year’s Gala and who solicited the items outside of the office door. If it is possible for you to get the same donations this year that would be superb! As donations come in we will post a current solicitation record in the office so businesses are not asked numerous times to donate to our school.
Please drop all items off no later than Friday Oct 16th at the school office or at:
Jami Oram’s Home: Valerie Roadfuss’s Home:
631 North 250 West OR 175 South 200 East
Heber Midway
If you have any questions please contact Jami at 435-657-2024 or oramsja@msn.com
Editor’s note: Please contact Jami Oram if you are able to help with the Fall Gala. The volunteer sign-up sheet for the fall gala was taken home to give to Jami; then the editor’s kids got a hold of it, made it into a paper airplane and promptly flew it into the ditch. I (said editor) apologize to everyone and ask any potential volunteers to PLEASE get in touch with Jami Oram. Otherwise you’ll have me calling each of you this coming week, and who really wants that. -Tricia Livingstone
With construction soon to start on the new portables, drop off and pick at the lower lot will become permanent. Using this area will allow for drop off rather than having to park your car. Soooo….
Drop off—-Please turn right as you enter the parking lot and circle around the edge to the front. Have the children exit the car and proceed to the passenger side of the car and walk AROUND the parking lot (not through). The goal is to keep the children from darting through the lot increasing their chances of being hurt. If you wish to park, please escort your child through the parking lot to the entrance.
Pick Up—- Drive in the same way and wait in the line of cars. The kids will be in the area behind the cones waiting to be picked up. Again, you can park and walk to the coned-in area to pick up your child if you wish.
Please do not drive around other cars in line since children can be exiting or entering the cars on the drivers side.
With just a little patience we can keep our children safe!
Parking: Thank you to all of the parents for your help with parking this week. Please remember that on Friday drop-off and pick-up will be up at the lodge.
Monday, Sept 7th: No School. Enjoy the Labor Day holiday.
Sheepdog Trials: The Sheepdog Classic is once again coming to Soldier Hollow on Labor Day weekend. We have been given the opportunity this year to raise money for our school at this event. We will be operating the Coca-Cola© trailer. We need volunteers to help sell beverages: From Friday, Sept 4th, – Monday, Sept 7th. We need help from 10:45 – 6:15 on each day. If you are able to help any of these days for a two-hour shift (or more) please contact T. McClellan at patrickandtiff@q.com or 435-654-4755.
Be sure to go see the Sheepdog Championship this weekend if you get the chance. It is amazing to watch these animals in action.
Swiss Days Parade: Thank you for a great summer of community outreach. Thank you to all of you who helped in the Farmers Market Booth, the Float decorating and the Heber parade.
We have one more parade and we NEED parents and kids to walk/ride with the SHCS float. Remember to dress like what you want to be in the future or as one of your favorite characters from history.
When: Saturday Sept. 5th.
Where: Main Street, Midway. Lineup is at 9:15. Our meeting spot will be between 300 East & River Road. Please park at the Church or Midway Elementary and walk to our float location. We are #65. If you plan on riding your bike, scooter, boards, or anything else, you need to wear your helmet. Remember to wear sunscreen.
Note: Parents if you are just dropping off your child to ride in the parade you will need to let Megan Reed know which pick up spot you will pick your child up from after our float has finished passing through the parade route. Our two pick up spots will be on the North East corner of Town Square (by the city buildings) and 100 north and 200 East. Please be there ASAP.
If any of you can help supervise at the pickup spots until the parents pick up, please let me know.
This is a great way to pick up some of your volunteer hours!
Thanks again to all of you who have put in time & your talents to make this a successful program. Have a great school year. — Megan Reed: 435-671-3577 or M3gst3r@hotmail.com –
