Utah Olympic Park Ski Program:

Attention Alpine Skiers Age 7-10 years old ~ Are you looking for something new to try?

Checkout the Utah Olympic Park Explorers Ski Program.  By participating in the ski explorers your child will have a unique opportunity to be introduced to and reinforce ski skills in Nordic Ski Jumping, Alpine Skiing, Freestyle Skiing (moguls) and Freeride (boxes, rails and jumps) all in one program.

Our goal is to create an environment that is FUN, dynamic and inherently teaches well rounded ski skills.  Our curriculum is heavily alpine based as we feel this is the foundation to open doors for children to participate in a variety of ski sports.  The program is not meant to replace ski schools, as we require all participants to have at least an intermediate level of skiing, but to give youngsters the opportunity to try other ski sports, build their foundation of ski skills and possibly introduce them to a sport they would like to pursue in the future.  We will send home a skill card at the end of the session that will note the skills that were introduced and how your son or daughter progressed with those skills.  We will also have a fun “ Ski Meister” competition on the last day where the kids will run gates for time and ski jump distances that we encourage you to come out and cheer them on! The Utah Olympic Park runs programs in ski jumping with the Park City Nordic Ski Club and freestyle/Freeride with FLY freestyle.  If at the end of the session your son or daughter would like to try one of these sports we can arrange for 1 – 2 free sessions with the perspective club.

The explorer’s program runs for 5 weeks starting Monday February 6^th to Monday March 5^th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.  The cost is $120.00 and includes lift ticket and coaching.

From the Office: Parents please try to make arrangements with your children before school on whether they are going to Little Vikings or any other after school activity. We only have two phone lines and they are limited to school business and emergencies. We seem to have a line-up of children after school not knowing (or not remembering) what they are supposed to be doing after school and asking to use the telephone. We’d appreciate your help with this. Also, please remember to call the office if your child will not be in school for any reason. Please don’t wait for us to call you. Thank you.

PTO Meeting: The monthly PTO meeting will be held at the school on Monday, January 9^th, at 8:30 a.m.  We will be talking about the Olympics, ski program volunteer opportunities, and an update on the school yearbook. Any parent is welcome to attend the PTO meetings.

Some of our very own students competed in Wasatch County’s Chess Tournament last Saturday. They competed in 5 rounds in about 4 1/2 hours. All of our students did very well with our girls both getting “Top Girl Trophy” and Harper ranking in the top 10.

Ski Program Begins Today: Monday, Dec 12^th. Please make sure that your child’s ski waiver is turned in to the office so they can participate.

• Grades 1-3 ski on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-2:30
• Grades 4-8 ski on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30
• Kindergarten skis on Fridays from 9:30-10:30

Please make sure your student comes prepared for skiing with the appropriate winter clothes: jacket, water-repellant pants, gloves and a hat.  The ski schedule is posted in the school office & classrooms.

We need several parent volunteers to help with the ski program.  You can help with any or all of the following:

• skiing with the students
• helping them with gear
• walking the students up to the lodge to ski and then to the parking lot for pick-up

Karla Willis is heading up the parent ski volunteers this year.  Please contact her if you would like to help, or if you have any questions.

Soldier Hollow Lodge will be doing cross-country ski training for any parent volunteers that are interested on Dec 14^th and 15^th, from 11:00 – 12:00 each day.  Wednesday the 14^th will be classic skiing and Thursday the 15^th will be skate skiing.  It is a good opportunity to learn technique (or just take a refresher class) and as always, the equipment and skiing is free for parent volunteers.

The Little Vikings after-school ski program will begin today.  It is available for children between the ages of 6 – 13. Little Vikings is on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 – 5:00.  Soldier Hollow students involved in the program will stay at the school in designated classrooms and do their homework until it is time to go to the lodge.  Parents will need to pick up their student at the lodge at 5:00.  If you have any questions about this program or need to register and pay any fees required, contact the Soldier Hollow Lodge at 435-654-2002.

Rewards Program: Box Tops, Campbell’s labels, Sunny D labels….how many did you collect over the Thanksgiving break? From now until December 16 we will be competing. Whoever brings in the most labels/box tops wins- one winner per grade.

Drum roll…….Ms. Mary Ann’s class has taken the lead with a total of 320 tops/labels, Mr. Reinhart’s class is in 2^nd with 316, and Mr. Gallo’s class has 311.  Way to go!! This could be a close race all year.  Individuals leading are Samantha Devine, Sean Gilboy and JD Broadhead. Nice work!  It’s COMPETITION TIME! From now until December 16 we will be competing. One winner per grade.  Whoever brings in the most labels/box tops wins.  Ready, set, GO!!!

• Looking for volunteers hours and a challenge? GreenCouncil will be collecting cans to raise funds and to participate in the Great American Can Roundup! We will need a collection system and are looking for help in designing and building this system. Up to the challenge? Contact Kelly Gallo. Also, save those cans and start sending them in! Thanks!

USU Master Gardener Program: If you have any interest in gardening this is wonderful program to help you garden in our unique location. 2012 Summit/Wasatch Master Gardener program.  Classes will start Feb 2nd and end on April 26th.  Registration deadline is January 27th.  Details concerning class schedule, topics, locations, cost, how to sign up, etc.. can be found at our web site: http://extension.usu.edu/summit/

Also, if you have any interest in the helping the school revamp their gardening program, this would be a wonderful learning opportunity for you to prepare for helping with the school garden. Kelly Gallo is currently fund-raising and grant-writing to continue the move of the old garden to its new location and to acquire the materials necessary to allow us to try for a four-season harvest.The school is also starting a 4-H Junior Master Gardener Club at lunch that is open to all students. Students may sign up to receive a handbook of lessons they can complete along with volunteer hours in the garden to work towards earning their Junior Master Gardener Certification. Parent volunteers and leaders for this program would be greatly appreciated!
