Picture Re-takes, Nov 4^th

Soup and Soldier Hollow, Nov. 14th: Just a reminder that Soldier Hollow Lodge is having their fund raiser on November 14^th, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

PTO meeting, Monday, Nov 3^rd at 8:30 a.m.

Halloween: The trunk or treat will be held inside the coral down by the amphitheatre, across for the first parking lot. Please bring your car before 11:20 to get set up. We will not be letting cars in and out after this time because the kids will be present. Parents, please feel free to bring optional treats such as pencils, stickers, little toys, candy, etc - enough for 150 students. We hope to see a lot of parents there to help make this a success.

Playground Celebration, Friday, Oct 31st: OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING FOR THE PLAY STRUCTURE. We’ll be honoring students & major funders who helped raise money in 2006, 2007 & 2008. We’d LOVE to have parents participate as well! Wear warm jackets – It’ll be outside.

11:30 – noon: PLAYGROUND PIZZA PARTY. (During Trunk or Treat, amphitheatre) As a thank you to all of our students who did such a great job with fundraising for the playground, we’re throwing a school-wide pizza party.

Book Fair, Oct. 31-Nov. 7: SHCS Library: Our Safari book fair arrives for Halloween! Check out all the fun this Friday 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., before or after the Trunk or Treat. Send your students in for a free Halloween prize & enter their name for the daily free book give away.

We will be sending out e-mail reminders, news, & count down until the end of the fair. Don’t miss Dads & Doughnuts on Wednesday the 5^th or Moms & Muffins Friday the 7^th at 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. There will be a free book drawing each of these mornings at 8:10 a.m. for those attending.

Other fun incentives & activities include:

• Guessing jar: how many animals on the Safari.
• Winners from each grade
• Your name in the daily book give away jar for: Each book purchase made.
• Each Donation to One for Books
• Wearing an animal shirt or animal print clothing
• Buying a book for the teacher wish list
• Attending a special event - Halloween sneak peak, Dads & Doughnuts, Moms & Muffins, Parent TeacherC onference

Our students are already showing excitement as the signs go up & the fair gets closer. We even had a 2^nd grader kiss the book fair sign & say: “ I just love books”. These are good things! Come in, enjoy buying books, & help our school library re-new & improve. All proceeds will benefit our school.

Arts & Crafts Day: Friday, December 5: We will have our Holiday Arts & Crafts Gift day. The 1^st-8^th grade students will work in multi-age groups of up to 10 students making a gift for the holidays.

There will be a meeting in the art class on Tuesday, November 4th after school to begin planning. I am looking for parents who would like to help by either doing a project with around 10 students or assisting with a group. If you can think of a project you would like to make that would be great. I will be collecting ideas as well. If you’ve already signed up I will be giving you a call or please feel free to email me. If you miss the meeting that’s ok just let me know how you can help.

Rewards Program: Wow! Fourth grade came out of nowhere to take the lead in the basketball game! Great job! Every time a class brings in 10 Campbell’s Labels For Education, they will get a basketball in the net (which is on the bulletin board). The class that makes the most baskets by Friday, November 7^th will win a basketball for their class to use at recess. Since we now have basketball hoops at the new playground, a ball will come in handy! Please make sure you include the UPC Codes on your labels – they cannot be sent in without them! Here are the current standings:

4^th grade – 6 baskets

Parent Teacher Conferences, Nov 5^th and 6^th: Sign up sheets are available in the hallway just past the school office. If the times you need are not available, please talk to the teacher about arranging a different day/time.

School Yearbook: Below are the scheduled dates for each grade to come and get yearbook pictures taken. It will be after school, under a white tent. Please be patient with us while waiting. We are trying to make sure every student gets their picture in the yearbook.

Adopt-A-Native Elder Program — Items due Nov. 6th. This is our third year that the 3rd Grade class is sponsoring a Navajo Grandmother (Grandma Pauline Begay). Learn more about the program at: www.anelder.org.

As we study Native Americans of the past, we also want to recognize those that are still living! There is much to learn from these Navajo elders before they are gone and with them a culture that is truly unique.

Please take the next few weeks to accumulate any canned goods, blankets, clothing, kitchen ware, etc. We will be delivering our donations on our field trip to the Navajo Rug Show at Deer Valley on November 7th.

Note: Please refrain from donating anything that requires electricity, this luxury is unavailable to the elders. Thank you! — Miss Drozd and the Third Grade

Oct 31st - Halloween. Students are welcome to wear costumes to school, but there can be no masks, weapons or blood/gore. Mr. Weber suggests that the kids can dress up as a favorite character from a book. Parties will be on an individual class basis, & the entire school will be invited to a trunk-or-treat at 11:30 down at the amphitheatre (in the corral area, not the parking lot).

Student of the Week - Make sure to get your child’s “student of the week” project turned into the office. We do not want any child to be left out. Be sure to let your child design the sheet & tell about himself/herself. Please write the grade on the front/back. We will display one student per grade, per week.

We had 3 students selling over 150 tickets each, 4 students selling over 100 tickets each, and 4 students selling over 40 tickets each. That’s incredible! Especially during such a slow economy. Go Soldier Hollow!

“A for Effort” award: 2nd grader won by selling to 86 different people.

Top classes were: 4th grade, 2nd grade & 3rd grade with 7th/8th leading the upper grades.

Class participation: 6th grade won with 100% participation

Declaration of Household Income: The office needs to have a copy of this form filled out for every student at SHCS (one per family won’t work). We are funded based on the percentage of families who return the forms, not just on those who qualify. Forms are also available at the school office. Please contact Debbie or Danica with any questions.

Green Ribbon Week/Safety & Health Week: Sept 29 – Oct 3. Lots of fun activities will be going on this week, including a bike rodeo on October 3rd.

Emergency Kits: We would like an emergency kit for each child to be brought in by Oct 3. Please put the following items in a bag, with your child’s name on it: change of clothes, snacks, medicine your child needs on a daily basis, & a note/picture from home for reassurance. The PTO is providing water, food and emergency blankets for every child. Mrs. Drake has stickers, pencils & whistles to give to children who bring in their kits by Oct 3rd.

3rd & 4th Grades: Friday (Sep 26th) a ranger from Timpanogos Park will be visiting at 10:00

Fall Gala: Thank you to all of you who are working on donations for the Fall Gala. Please turn in all donations no later than Friday October 3rd. Remember the Gala is Saturday, October 11th, 6-10 pm (this is an adult event).

Tickets are now on sale at the school office, in the parking lot before & after school, or at Days Market. For anyone who would like to attend the Gala but cannot afford to purchase tickets, please talk to Mr. Weber regarding donated tickets.

The raffle was kicked off today, be sure to get the details from your student. We have great raffle prizes & fantastic incentive prizes for the kids to earn. Let’s see if we can beat last year’s outstanding $10,097.00 in raffle ticket sales. Thanks for your support!!! –The Fall Gala Committee

If you shop at Smith’s, Campbell’s has started a new promotion that will electronically give our school Campbell’s points every time you buy an eligible product using your Fresh Values Card! I urge everyone to sign up for this immediately at www.e-LabelsforEducation.com! It only takes a minute. Your children won’t receive credit for these points since I can’t track them, but it will really help us buy some great things for them! You can still send in your labels so your children receive credit for their class. (The school gets double points!) Please encourage your friends & relatives to sign up and help us save, too! This program is only for a few months, so stock up your food storage after you sign up!

Picture day: Wednesday, September 24th

Student council candidates: Speeches will be held Friday, Sept 19th, 9:00 am at the lodge. Students running should be prepared to deliver a short speech. Voting will follow in individual classrooms & results will be announced Monday, Sept 22nd.

Volunteer log: The office now has a computer set up (on the east wall) to record volunteer hours. Please start recording your hours via the computer.

THANK YOU to the Heimburger family! Especially to Anna Dance who’s work has donated numerous items to our school (15 new white boards, chairs, bookshelves, poster boards, etc.). This helps our school immensely. These are big cost items for schools, and to have them donated is a bonus for Soldier Hollow. — PTO President- Tiffany McClellan

UEN Websites: Parents can access teacher UEN websites for class information. There is valuable information on each site. Student government information can be found on Ms. Drozd’s site, as well as the third grade info.

Circus Day for Grades 3-8: K,1,2 classes have been planning our circus day activities since school started, but recently discovered that there is a conflict with the election speeches & voting this Friday. We have, therefore, rearranged our schedule of events so that grade 3-8 may attend the performance by Luna Sticks from 12:00 - 12:40. The remainder of the performance is reserved for grades K,1,2.

We expect to hold this performance in the amphitheatre & we advise that any child with a small umbrella bring it along. It can be used for the possibility of showers, as well as protecting the kids from the hot sun.

Circus Day for grade K,1,2: Below is a schedule for Circus Day, Friday the 19th. If you are a volunteer parent, please send a note or make a phone call to let your child’s teacher know when you could be available to accompany the children or help run an activity center. Volunteers are also needed Thursday after school to help make caramel apples.

8:45 – 10:00: entire school walks to lodge for election assembly
10:00 – 11:20: rotations of centers (Soda Pop the Clown, Mrs. Gallo teaching about animals, face painting & balance beam activities).
11:25 – 12:00: lunch
12:00 – 12:45: all school performance of Luna Sticks at outdoor theatre
12:45 – 1:30: kindergarten, 1 and 2 grades rotate with Luna Sticks for workshop
1:30 – 2:45: finish rotations of centers

Roots & Shoots: Please join SHCS Roots & Shoots Chapter and the Images of Nature Gallery on Sunday, Sept 21st to celebrate “International Day of Peace”. We’ll meet at 11:00 am on the corner of Park Ave & 9th Street, at the Park Silly Festival (in Park City) to make & fly peace doves. Help us celebrate peace & make the community aware of our school & our new Roots & Shoots after school club. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Gallo (570) 764-2609.
