As sweet songs of the west played outdoors in the pioneer campsite at Soldier Hollow, students cooked, created crafts and discussed the lifestyles of local ancestors from the 1800’s.
Students began camp by earning their “camp cook name” like Gut Robber, Sourdough or Biscuit Roller; and then decorated a bandana with that name. Next, they hiked through the Historical Huber Grove and drove through the Whitaker’s Ranch to view authentic pioneer buildings, tools, and antiques. After the tour, they returned to camp to discuss and try on authentic clothing of the period and pose for old western photographs.
Julie “Cookie” Lowe instructed pioneer cooking techniques & recipes, dutch oven cooking, plus campfire etiquette & history. Students prepared and cooked apple pies, fruit leather, homemade ice-cream, granola and tacos.
Megan “Paint Brush” Morgan hand colored each photo to resemble old western sepia tones of the time. Students then hand crafted a leather photo frame to hold photos from this camp. Morgan also taught students how to carve and design old-fashioned apple dolls along with braiding yarn for the bodies and cutting scraps of fabric for clothing.
Each student finished camp by exceptionally accomplishing pioneer recipes and crafts to cherish for a life time.
We still have openings in pottery, art, and book clubs during our July 11-14 camp and July 18-21 camp. Please call the school office to sign up.
